Chili Cheese Steaks



Adele's Catering Chili Cheese Steaks 
from The San Antonio Junior Forum's Celebrate San Antonio: A Cookbook  (1986)


2 lbs. round steak, cut 1-inch thick       
1/4 tsp. pepper
3 tblsp. flour                                            
1/4 c. shortening (I used canola oil)
2 tsp. salt                                                 
2 cups chopped onion
2 tsp. chili powder                                                                                                                                    1 16 oz. can whole tomatoes (I used Italian diced tomatoes)
4 oz. grated cheddar cheese


Preheat oven to 350*.  In a large skillet, brown meat in shortening and place in a 9x13 baking dish.  Brown onions until tender and stir in remaining ingredients except cheese.  Add to meat.  Bake 2 hours.  Add grated cheese on top and bake 5 minutes longer.


This was a hearty, high-protein crowd pleaser at my house!!
